Do Jews And Christians Worship the Same God?

pollThese poll questions were posted back-to-back by Michael Brown on Twitter. I like Michael Brown, even if I disagree with him on a few things. I don’t know how he would answer this question, but the answer is obvious to me, and I’m surprised by the poll results.

Muslims don’t worship the same God as Christians, because Christians worship Jesus Christ, and Muslims deny the deity of Christ. Christians believe Jesus is the Creator of the universe and the only true God. Muslims deny those truths. Thankfully, 94% of the respondents to Michael’s poll agree.

What is confusing is that almost certainly, a lot of the same people who overwhelmingly got the right answer with the Muslim question, failed the Jewish question. To understand why that is, read the paragraph above about Muslims and substitute Jews for Muslims:

Jews don’t worship the same God as Christians, because Christians worship Jesus Christ, and Jews deny the deity of Christ. Christians believe Jesus is the Creator of the universe and the only true God. Jews deny those truths.

Clearly there is a misunderstanding somewhere among Michael’s audience. I hope he will take the time to teach his listeners the truth on this topic.

It’s pretty clear to me why the average Christian would make this error. Many Christians seemed to have overreacted to the media’s political correctness, by hating Islam. On the flip side just as the media seems unable to criticize Islam for reasons of political correctness, it is politically incorrect to criticize Judaism or Israel in most churches. This has led to the theological error you see in the poll. The wrath of God abides on those who reject Christ, be they Jew or gentile (John 3:36). Islam and Judaism are equally evil religions taking people to hell.

  1. Muslims still believe Jesus was a great prophet, whereas for Jews, he’s nothing to mention at all, really. Being Jewish, I don’t think Judaism is evil but I’m perfectly willing to accept that Jews and Christians don’t worship the same god.

Thanks for your comment. From a Jewish perspective, it’s even more clear that Christians and Jews don’t worship the same God.

The question for you is if you reject Christ, what are you going to do about your sins?

      Thanks,

      THH,

You said, “Ask forgiveness from the people I hurt and try to do better.”

That’s good, but I was referring to your sins against your Creator–Jesus Christ. Sins such as lying, lust, hatred, theft, idolatry, etc.

The punishment for lying is eternity in the lake of fire (Revelation 21:8).

      • If you know I’m not a Christian, then why would you ask what I’m going to do about my sins against Jesus? That doesn’t make sense. You already know I’m not worried about such things.

      THH,

You said, “You already know I’m not worried about such things.”

I’m warning you and telling you that you need to be worried. Jesus Christ is your Creator, and you will give an account for every thought word and deed, regardless of whether you’re a Christian or not.

John 3:36 says, “He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

      Thanks,
      Bill
